AAPT is one of Australia's three largest telecommunications carriers and is part of the Telecom New Zealand Group. Since its establishment in 1991, AAPT has been committed to driving competition in the Australian telecommunications market through the provision of quality and competitively priced communications services.
AAPT is one of Australias most dynamic telecommunications companies and is part of the Telecom New Zealand Group.
The company takes a straightforward approach to providing customer-focused communications solutions. It offers a range of local and long distance voice, mobile, data and Internet services to residential, business, government and wholesale customers.
Whether it's for home or business, AAPT is big enough to meet all its customers communication needs yet small enough to be innovative and deliver quickly.
AAPT originally an offshoot of Australian Associated Press (AAP) started business in 1991 as Telstra's first competitor in long distance voice and data services.
On 1 July 1997, AAPT was awarded a carrier licence when legislative restriction on the maximum number of carrier licences in the Australian telecommunications industry was removed.
Five months later in November 1997, AAPT completed a public offering and was the first telecommunications carrier to list on the Australian Stock Exchange.
AAPT was fully acquired by Telecom New Zealand and was subsequently delisted from the Australian Stock Exchange in November 2000.
Today AAPT is one of only three Australian telecommunications providers to own and operate its own national voice and data network.
The company was formed by the division of the communications businesses of Australian Associated Press. In 1992 AAPIS was formed with News Corporation and John Fairfax Holdings as majority shareholders with MCI and Todd Capital also possessing shares in the company. According to AAPT's website the company began operating as the first significant competitor to Telstra in the long distance voice and data markets in 1991. The company received a carrier licence on 1 July 1997 and was later listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in November of the same year. In January 1999 Todd Capital sold its entire stake in the company.
In 2000 the company was acquired by Telecom New Zealand and delisted from the stock exchange. Today AAPT claims to be one of only three Australian telecommunications providers to own and operate its own national voice and data network. AAPT has positioned itself a virtual network operator in the mobile market utilising the Vodafone Australia. In 2006 CommodiTel, acquired AAPT's prepaid customer base.
